The sculpted yet sophisticated bodywork of the Baleno gelling well with its 16-inch two-tone alloy wheels, a heavily-chiseled front half, along with its chrome-lined door handles, and a sloped roofline does its design enough justice. Once you are at the back of the Baleno, you will be greeted by a sporty spoiler, steeply-sloped windscreen leading to a protruding chrome bar, sculped bumper, and C-shaped tail lamps.

Overall, the exterior design of the new Baleno is not too dissimilar to the old one – it’s the details that get the nip & tuck. The boomerang-shaped chrome-finished windowline is a nice touch, while the strong coupe-like effect for the roof goes really well with the whole car’s styling. Years later, the Maruti Baleno is undefeatable one of the best-styled cars in its segment – the caveat being its aggressive styling details might be much for some.

On the inside, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno looks suitably upmarket and spacious. There are multiple layers, colors and textures used on the dashboard and door pads. While the blue and black theme may not be for everyone, it helps lift the cabin’s overall ambiance. The buttons for operating the air-conditioning system are well laid out and the two rocker switches feel premium enough to use.

The central touchscreen is easy to use as well, while its display feels responsive and sharp. The view from the driver’s seat is good, with the clocks looking neat and well-defined, and the central MID comes with many useful indications and menus for you to flick through. Despite the sloping roof design, those seated in the back will not be complaining about headroom that often.

As for the seats, their comfort factor is alright and there’s a reasonable level of support provided by the side bolsters up front. Build quality is fine, but it doesn’t feel all that high-end or posh. Thankfully, there are enough storage spaces for you to keep your knick-knacks – front cupholders, a cubby under the sliding armrest, and usable door pockets. You also get rear AC vents and fast-charging USB sockets. As for the Baleno’s boot, it can hold 318 liters worth of luggage.

Getting in and out of this Alto will also be easier than the 800, as the K10 is taller. However, the rear bench not only lacks support for your neck but also for your thighs on long trips.

One of the cars that have been doing quite well in this space is the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso. Often advertised as a Micro SUV, this tall vehicle does its best to imitate design aspects that are more commonly found on ladder-body SUVs. This is its strongest forte and USP.

The S-Presso comes with a fair choice of trim levels, though it will be wise to skip the bargain-basement variant. To make it seem like a small SUV from the outside, Maruti Suzuki has increased the overall height of the S-Presso by a fair margin. The automaker has managed to do this by giving the car a ground clearance of 180mm while also having the roof height reaching nearly 1.6 meters off the ground. While its faux SUV shape might fascinate those that like tall-riding hatchbacks, it may offend those that prefer a more digestible body shape.

The S-Presso’s basic exterior styling is not as cohesive as one might imagine, with awkward proportions that don’t work in its favor too well. The tall stance of this car is further elevated by its relatively-short overhangs, squared wheel arches, flared fenders, and a flat roofline. As for the front end of the S-Presso, it looks quite bold thanks to the large headlamps and a chrome-garnished front grille. Also, the front bumper looks remarkably similar to the one seen on some Mahindra SUVs.

The front also scores LED DRLs, along with a faux skid plate under the front bumper. When it comes to the sides of the S-Presso, your eyes will likely be drawn towards the difference in elevation between the front & rear door handles, then towards the thin veneer of black cladding placed below the doors. The only things to comment on when it comes to the rear of the S-Presso are its taillights that get LED running elements, static reflectors, and an all-black bumper.

Since you sit pretty high up in the S-Presso, your view out of the cabin is pretty good. Similarly, ingress and egress will not be an issue either. The doors of the S-Presso open pretty wide, but they do not have that tough feel to them. Once in the cabin, you will soon realize the thick C-pillars restrict quite a bit of your view outside. The seats of the S-Presso are average in terms of their comfort, but taller folks will need breaks between long drives.

On the other hand, most people will find the front seats to be not short on lateral or under-thigh support. The rear bench does lack the right amount of squab, but those seated here will have access to loads of headroom. One of the other things your eyes will be drawn to is the Mini-inspired center console design, though it doesn’t feel anywhere near as well-polished or premium in its general look and feel.

Then there’s the instrument cluster and infotainment system that some might like, but many others will definitely not. On a similar note, the S-Presso’s 240-liter boot is not the most practical, being smaller than even some hatchbacks. As expected, the general build quality is not amongst this car’s strong suits, with as flimsy materials being quite common.

The Honda City is undeniably one of the best and most successful sedans of all time. In India, the City has an almost god-like following amongst many. Over the two decades or so that this mid-size sedan has been on sale in the country, the seventh-generation model really has been gaining a lot of attention from prospective buyers since its launch. That’s when Honda dropped the curtains on the e:HEV – the City’s hybrid form.

To keep things simple for its customers, the Honda City e:HEV is only available in a fully-loaded ZX variant in India. Simply looking at the City e:HEV won’t be enough for most to tell this apart from its regular petrol sibling. This being a hybrid, the Honda logos on the nose and the tail have blue hues around them, while there’s the obligatory ‘e:HEV’ badging on the bootlid.

In terms of its design, the City Hybrid looks fairly identical to the standard model, which is not a bad thing at all. The seventh-generation City is a sophisticated and clean design, though some elements do look more sporty than others. Examples of this can be seen in the rear bumper which features a diffuser that’s finished in faux carbon fiber, a trunk-lip spoiler, aggressively-styled front foglamp housing, and a black honeycomb grille.

The sophistication part comes from the integration of the full-LED headlamps with a multi-array setup, a large & thick chrome bar on the grille, chrome door handles, a clutter-free side profile, and wraparound tail lamps with unique 3D LED elements. The trunk and the smooth-flowing roof also lead to a well-crafted exterior. Unfortunately, the gap between the 16-inch alloy rims and the deep wheel wells of the City e:HEV makes for an underwhelming & under-tired look.

Honda City e:HEV – Cabin and Practicality

Just like its petrol-only model, the City Hybrid’s interior looks and feels upmarket and even posh. It’s plush, well-built, spacious, features good-quality materials in several places, and boasts a fairly quiet cabin for the most part. When it comes to the seats, the Honda City has always scored well – both in terms of comfort and support. That remains true with the City Hybrid as well.

The front chairs are perhaps even superior to cars that cost more than this one, but their large proportions can make it challenging for rear passengers to see what’s exactly in front of them. The large headrests are good as well, while the rear seats offer good back support and their recline is decent too. There’s plenty of rear headroom for people under six feet tall, with a center armrest and large windows proving additional comfort.

The dual-tone interior of the City e:HEV makes for a light and airy cabin feel. Then there are also other upscale touches such as wood inserts on the dash, and chrome door handles, apart from piano black & silver accents on various surfaces. The HVAC dials are also well-finished and feel nice to operate. On a side note, the rear bench is mainly meant for two adults for maximum comfort. The Honda City Hybrid has a trunk space of 410 liters, which is fairly average.
