Best Cars Under 10 Lakhs In India – Price, Specifications, Mileage, Colors, Images

In a cost-conscious market like India, automakers are constantly waging a battle in designing cars that are aggressively priced. These companies also have to ensure that their vehicles have some or other unique feature to draw people to their respective showrooms. As it is with life, sometimes these techniques work, other times they don’t.

In this article, we are going to be looking at one of the most crucial areas in the Indian car market – cars that are priced at less than 10 lakhs. However, while most contenders here do not exceed that budget, some of them have their fully-loaded variants that do. Also, keep in mind that all the prices mentioned here are for ex-showroom, Mumbai (unless mentioned otherwise). Before we proceed with the article itself, let’s take a quick look at the prices of these new cars:

*Note: For cars that exceed 10 lakhs, each has variants that are priced lesser.

Model Ex-Showroom Price
Tata Tiago Rs.5,40,000 – Rs. 7,82,000
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Rs. 5,47,500 – Rs. 7,08,000

1. Tata Tiago

Tata Tiago

Since its arrival, the Tata Tiago has been ticking several important boxes for customers. Apart from its affordability factor, the hatchback’s impressive safety rating and modern styling have had it become the talk of the town. After receiving a minor facelift not too long ago, the Tiago trundled on as one of the best cars in the Indian brand’s product portfolio.

Tata Tiago Exterior

The Tiago’s exterior lends itself really well, being a combination of cute and cheerful. The sloping bonnet meets a wide and smiling face where you will also be greeted by projector headlamps, a stylish chrome grille with unique motifs, and a sculpted bumper that houses a large central intake and LED DRLs.

Tata Tiago Rear

Around the sides, there’s not much to talk about in particular, though the 15-inch alloy rims and the arrow-shaped door-handle design do look nice. The rear of the Tiago is compact, and the styling features here include a neat roof spoiler, cute tail lamps, a chrome strip on the boot, and a twin-element bumper. While the Tata Tiago may not boast a particularly-distinct design, it is not an outlandish one either.

Tata Tiago – Cabin and Practicality

Tata Tiago - Cabin and Practicality

The cabin of the Tiago is actually more spacious than it looks from the outside. While it may not be as roomy as the new Wagon R, the Tiago’s overall build feels far superior. The dual-tone color scheme looks good, and the seats themselves sport the same “tri-arrow” motif as seen on the grille and are comfortable too – there are also get adjustable headrests. However, despite those few extra millimeters over the Maruti, seating three people at the back won’t be something you would want to do often. There are several utility spaces where you can store your items, whilst the boot volume is 242 liters.

  • Keyless entry
  • Electronically adjustable & auto-folding door mirrors
  • Height adjustable driver’s seat
  • ‘Follow Me Home’ lamps

Even though it is an entry-level offering from Tata, the Tiago’s features list isn’t lacking anything major.

Tata Tiago – Safety Equipment

Tata Tiago – Safety Equipment

Modern cars from Tata are some of the safest cars in India. In the case of the Tiago, you get ABS with EBD, Corner Stability Control, dual airbags, a reversing camera with dynamic guidelines, speed-sensitive auto-door locks, a day & night IRVM, and a rear defogger with a wiper. Due to all of its safety nannies plus a smart and robust construction, the Tiago scored a solid 4 stars at Global NCAP.

Tata Tiago – Engine and Gearbox

Tata Tiago – Engine and Gearbox

Powering the Tata Tiago is a 1.2-liter three-cylinder Revotron engine that can be fueled by either petrol or CNG. When on a diet of lady petrol, the Tiago offers around 85 horsepower and 113Nm of torque. On the other hand, when on CNG, the powerplant delivers 72 horsepower and 95Nm of twisting force. The Tiago can be paired with either a 5-speed manual or an AMT. Do note that the CNG variants are only available with the manual gearbox.

Tata Tiago – Engine and Gearbox

In case you pick the Tiago petrol with either the manual or AMT gearbox, you can expect a mileage of around 19 kpl. Whereas, the CNG version of the Tata hatchback is rated at 26.49 km/kg.

AutoBreeds’s Choice

Despite its relatively high price, the best of the bunch here has to be the XZ+ variant. It gets all the feel-good features and also looks the best. However, if your budget can’t be stretched by that much, then the XT variant it is.

There are several instantly notable changes on the outside of the new Wagon R. It begins with the completely redesigned front, side, and rear end. The brazenly-oversized headlamps capture one’s attention easily, whilst the stylish grille has been tacked with a neat-looking chrome element, rounded up by a thoroughly restyled bumper. All in all, the new Wagon R’s front fascia looks quite good.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R – Exterior

The ’Tall Boy’ design of this hatchback becomes very evident as you move to the side, where you will also find brand-new & stylish door mirrors, a floating roof design towards the rear, and a set of new 14-inch alloy wheels (only on the top variants). As for the rather odd-looking rear end, it too gets oversized but conspicuous and vertically-aligned tail lamps. While the new Wagon R’s generic silhouette could be perceived as bland by some, others will appreciate Maruti’s new approach.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Cabin and Practicality

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R – Cabin and Practicality

Blessed with a longer 2435mm wheelbase, the new Wagon R’s cabin feels larger and is even more spacious than the old model. Not only that, but the increase in dimensions has also led to a truly impressive boot space of 341 liters. Just so you know, that is even more than what you get with the Brezza! The Wagon R gets two gloveboxes for added convenience, while the front door pockets can hold 1-liter bottles.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R – Cabin and Practicality

The dual-tone interior does look nicer as well, while the renewed design of the dashboard and gauge cluster makes a big difference between this car and its predecessor. Add to this the huge glass area and acres of headroom, and the interior of the new Wagon R definitely feels appreciably open and airy. The seats are fairly comfortable and feel decently supportive over long drives too, though none of them get adjustable headrests.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R – Features

  • Remote keyless entry
  • Idle Start Stop (ISS) system
  • Tilt-adjustable steering wheel
  • Split-folding rear seats
  • Day & Night rearview mirror

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R – Safety Equipment

Riding on Maruti Suzuki’s latest Heartect platform, the new Wagon R claims to be a safer car than before. It comes with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, Hill Hold Assist, rear parking sensors, a speed-alert system along with speed-sensitive door locks, and central locking. Finally, the Wagon R also features front fog lamps, a rear wiper & washer, and seatbelt reminders with front seatbelts that also offer pre-tensioners.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R – Engine and Gearbox

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R – Engine and Gearbox

The new Wagon R is available with two Maruti’s K-Series Dual-Jet engines: a 1.0-liter three-popper and a larger 1.2-liter four-banger. Both units get dual variable valve timing for better efficiency and lower emissions. The K10C three-cylinder in the Wagon R petrol makes around 66hp and 89Nm of torque, whilst the same motor when fueled by CNG produces a meager 56hp and 82.1Nm of torque.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R – Engine and Gearbox

The K12N four-cylinder engine of the new Wagon R develops over 88hp and 113Nm of torque. Maruti offers a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AGS gearbox with this car, where the ‘AGS’ is the brand’s term for an Automated Manual Transmission or AMT. The Wagon R 1.0L petrol MT claims a fuel efficiency of 24.35 kpl while the AGS version is rated at 25.19 kpl. Meanwhile, the Wagon R 1.2L petrol MT has a claimed mileage of 23.56 kpl, with the AGS version scoring 24.43 kpl.

AutoBreeds’s Choice

According to us, the best version of the new Wagon R is the one with the peppy 1.2-liter engine and a 5-speed manual gearbox. It is easily efficient enough while also providing a decent driving experience plus a quieter cabin.

3. Maruti Suzuki Swift

Maruti Suzuki Swift

The Swift is such a vehicle that requires absolutely no formal introduction. Since its launch back in 2005, this hatchback has been one of Maruti Suzuki’s top success stories in the country. The current model’s arrival was long awaited, and it has already proven itself as a great hatchback at the price. With its new boisterous design and more equipment on offer, the new Swift is here looking quite enticing indeed.

There’s no denying the fact that the Swift has always been appreciated for its styling, and that continues with the all-new model too. In fact, there is a big difference between the previous models and this one – it sure does stand out. The cheeky-looking smiling front fascia features a large hexagonal grille with a stylish chrome strip in the middle and a big Suzuki badge to go along with it.

Maruti Suzuki Swift – Exterior

Then there are the new LED headlamps that also get sleek LED DRLs, and the bottom half of the bumper does look quite nice. In one of its dual-tone shades, the new Swift looks even better when viewed from the side. The other two noticeable styling features here include rear door handles that are integrated into the C-pillars and a stylish-looking floating roof design. At the back, the new model gets small but chic taillights, a larger bumper, and a subtle spoiler. No matter where you look at this car from, there is no mistaking this for anything other than a Swift.

Maruti Suzuki Swift – Cabin and Practicality

Maruti Suzuki Swift – Cabin and Practicality

The new Swift’s cabin genuinely feels new, because it is. Maruti Suzuki has worked on making this interior look more modern and driver-oriented as well. For the most part, the company has succeeded in doing that. The quality of materials and their fit & finish has also seen some improvement over previous iterations. Similarly, the new Swift has a slightly longer wheelbase and is wider too. Better yet, the boot space has now grown to a more palatable 268 liters.

Maruti Suzuki Swift – Cabin and Practicality

This is still not the most spacious hatchback around, and the narrow rear windows will make those at the back feel hemmed in. On the flip side, the new Swift does come with improved seats and switchgear, slightly more kneeroom for rear passengers, a sportier cockpit arrangement with a flat-bottom steering wheel, and a colored MID that displays more information.

Maruti Suzuki Swift – Features

  • Smart keyless entry with push-button start
  • Automatic LED projector headlights
  • Electrically adjustable & auto retractable door mirrors
  • Telescoping steering wheel with integrated controls
  • Cruise control
  • Automatic climate control
  • 6-speaker audio system
  • ‘Feather Touch’ infotainment touchscreen with Smartplay Studio app
  • Voice command
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Maruti Suzuki Swift – Cabin and Practicality

The new Maruti Swift’s 15-inch alloy wheels are of a new design on the ZXI+ variant, though the ZXI’s looks much better.

Maruti Suzuki Swift – Safety Equipment

Maruti Suzuki Swift – Safety Equipment

Depending on the variant, the new Maruti Suzuki Swift comes with multiple safety gadgets. Chief amongst these are dual front airbags, ABS and EBD with Brake Assist, ESP with Hill Hold Assist, rear parking sensors plus a reversing camera, ‘Pinch Guard’ for driver’s side power window, ISOFIX anchor points, High Speed Alert System, and pre-tensioning front seatbelts. Irrespective, the new Swift will be safer than the old one.

Maruti Suzuki Swift – Engine and Gearbox

Maruti Suzuki Swift – Engine and Gearbox

The Swift makes use of Maruti’s new 1,197cc Dual Jet petrol engine that pumps out 88.5 horsepower and 113Nm of pulling force. This four-popper can also be had in a CNG avatar wherein it produces 76.4 horsepower and 98.5Nm of torque – both of which are higher than in the Wagon R. You can choose between a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox, which Maruti has coined “Automatic Gear Shift” or “AGS”.

Maruti Suzuki Swift – Engine and Gearbox

In its manual form, the new Swift claims a mileage of 22.38 kpl, while the AMT version is rated at 22.56 kpl. As for the CNG Swift, it is rated at 30.90 km/kg. The Swift continues to be a fun-to-drive car, and this new one can crack the ton in around 12 seconds or so while also being fairly composed at high speeds.

AutoBreeds’s Choice

If you are on a tighter budget, then the Swift VXI makes a good case for itself. However, if you can stretch a little more, then the fully-loaded Swift ZXI+ will be an excellent option.

4. Tata Punch

Tata Punch

The latest in the line of Tata cars comes in the form of the all-new Punch. Designed as a small crossover SUV, the Tata Punch has been making waves in the industry since its launch last year. In a market that’s already flooded with so many options, few cars (if any) really ever leave a lasting impression. With its exciting pricing, distinctive styling, extensive features list, and excellent safety rating, the Tata Punch will be liked by many.

Yes, those sure are a ton of variants/trims! The Tata Punch’s exterior colors include Grassland Beige, Tornado Blue, Calypso Red, Meteor Bronze, Atomic Orange, Tropical Mist, Daytona Grey, and Orcus White. Depending on the color chosen, the roof of the Tata Punch can either be painted in Black or White.

Tata Punch – Exterior

Tata Punch – Exterior

If you think the front end of the Punch looks like a miniature but a blended version of the Harrier and Nexon, Tata wouldn’t mind at all. The Punch’s front projects a butch and upright stance, while there is enough evidence of muscularity to be spotted by way of flared haunches and bold yet contemporary design elements. The rather small footprint of this car becomes increasingly apparent when you view it from the sides or the back.

Tata Punch – Exterior

However, the dual-tone paint scheme, high ground clearance, black body cladding, and squared-off wheel arches do a pretty commendable job of making the Punch resemble a small SUV. On the other hand, the petit rear end of the Punch is where that resemblance kind of falls apart – it appears more like a hatchback from this angle. Some of the cool touches on the exterior include the slim LED DRLs & projector headlamps up front, the swanky LED taillights, 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, and rear door handles that are placed in the C-pillar.

Tata Punch – Cabin and Practicality

Tata Punch – Cabin and Practicality

The first thing you will notice when you step inside the Punch, is just how high you are seated. In keeping with its “SUV” character, you tend to sit at a fairly commanding position in this car, which results in a good view outward. Also, the doors shut with a satisfying thud, leading to a sense of security and greater build. The dual-tone dashboard looks decent, but what really livens up this cabin are the color-matched finishing touches on various trim and the seat fabric.

Tata Punch – Cabin and Practicality

For most people, the cabin of the Tata Punch will feel roomy and airy, courtesy of its large greenhouse area and a high roof. While the rear bench is best suited for only two, the 366-liter boot is respectable for a car this size. It is easy to find a suitable driving position in the Punch, and aside from the small rear window, there are no real blind spots to speak of. The quality of materials is good too and the overall feel of this interior is youthful. There are also enough spaces in the Punch to store your knick-knacks, so practicality isn’t an issue.

Tata Punch – Features

  • Keyless entry with push-button start
  • Puddle lamps
  • 90-degree opening doors
  • Flat-bottom multifunction steering wheel
  • Automatic headlamps
  • Automatic windshield wipers
  • Auto-folding door mirrors
  • Rear armrest
  • Cruise control
  • Cooled glovebox
  • Automatic climate control
  • 7-inch color MID
  • 7-inch touchscreen with Connected Car Tech and IRA Voice Assistant
  • 6-speaker Harman sound system
  • Traction Pro Mode

Tata Punch – Features

Tata has equipped the Punch with more than enough features that allow this small SUV to really reel in those that love modern gadgets in their new cars.

Tata Punch – Safety Equipment

Tata Punch – Safety Equipment

Not only is this one of the most affordable new cars in India right now, but it is also one of its safest. With a full 5-star rating from GNCAP, the Tata Punch ‘punches’ well above its weight. In terms of its safety nannies, this small SUV gets ABS with EBD, Brake Sway Control, ISOFIX anchor points, rear defogger with wiper, front fog lamps with cornering function, anti-glare IRVM, and geo-fencing among other connected-car features.

Tata Punch – Engine and Gearbox

Tata Punch – Engine and Gearbox

Tata has equipped the Punch with an idle engine stop-start system to improve its mileage, while there are drive modes like Eco and City as well. Speaking of which, the Punch manual will deliver 18.97 kpl and the AMT is rated at 18.82 kpl. Empowering the SUV is a small 1,199cc three-cylinder petrol engine with the so-called “DynaPro Technology”. The result is nearly 85hp at 6,000 rpm and 113Nm of maximum torque at around 3,300 rpm.

Tata Punch – Engine and Gearbox

Transmission duties are handled by a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard, though there’s an AMT option as well. The AMT in the Tata Punch features ‘Traction Pro Mode’ for improving traction on challenging surfaces (not designed for actual off-road use). On the performance front, the Punch will reach a top speed of approximately 160 kph, while 100 kph comes up in around 16 seconds.

AutoBreeds’s Choice

While the whole Punch range is priced well, the best pick here would be the Punch Adventure trim. This is because you get enough goodies without having to splurge much.

5. Tata Altroz

Tata Altroz

The Tata Altroz is yet another famous car in our market. This is not only because of its incredible 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP but also down to its eye-catching Impact 2.0 design language. The fact that it is priced well only helps matters further for this premium hatchback. While many buyers salivate over crossovers/SUVs, cars like these should not be missed.

It seems like Tata Motors likes to inundate its customers with it comes to picking a variant or trim. Still, at least you can get the right car that suits you. Among the exterior colors on the Altroz, there are Cosmo Dark, High-Street Gold, Opera Blue, Downtown Red, Arcade Grey, Avenue White, and Harbour Blue.

Tata Altroz – Exterior

Tata Altroz – Exterior

The Impact 2.0 design language makes the Tata Altroz look really contemporary and fresh when compared to almost any other car in the segment. The poised and composed demeanor of the Altroz comes across really well, no matter which angle you look at it from. Meanwhile, the raked door pillars, steeply-sloped bonnet, and flared wheel arches with stylish 16-inch alloy rims give this car a sporty look.

Tata Altroz – Exterior

The chunky bumpers are well-sculpted, and the C-pillar-mounted door handles are in keeping with the Altroz’s chic outlook. The large sweptback headlamps get projector units, while the front bumper sports large fog lamps with integrated LED DRLs. The rear too boasts wraparound taillights that jut out to create a unique impression, and a small roof spoiler completes the sporty look. Of course, the chiseled bodywork and a tight beltline make for an athletic appearance as well.

Tata Altroz – Cabin and Practicality

Tata Altroz – Cabin and Practicality

One of the most prominent aspects of the interior of the Tata Altroz is its ‘Floating Island’ dashboard design. This seemingly stand-alone structure gets its own blue LED ambient lighting and essentially houses the tablet-like infotainment screen, center AC vents, and an Altroz badging. The dual-tone theme of the cabin is further enhanced by different colored metallic inserts, chrome detailing on some of the switchgear, and even more blue LEDs.

Tata Altroz – Cabin and Practicality

As for comfort, the seats offer plenty of cushioning and support over long journeys. And while the NVH levels coming from the suspension components of the Altroz aren’t intrusive, engine noise at higher revs and road noise could have been better contained. On a similar note, the quality of much of the materials used in this cabin is far from premium, though space isn’t the biggest concern. The Tata Altroz’s boot space is 345 liters, which makes it actually quite usable.

Tata Altroz – Features

  • Keyless entry & go
  • Rain-sensing windsheild wipers
  • Automatic headlights
  • Leatherette upholstery
  • Sliding front armrest
  • Cooled glovebox
  • Harman sound system
  • Automatic climate control with rear vents and ‘Xpress Cooling’
  • IRA Connected Car suite
  • Voice command that supports Hinglish

Tata Altroz – Features

While it is spelled funny, the Altroz’s Xpress Cooling function really comes into its own during hot summer days. Then there is the Voice Command, which not only understands Hindi and English but also Hinglish.

Tata Altroz – Safety Equipment

Tata Altroz – Safety Equipment

Encompassing the Altroz’s other features are safety-related ones like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and Brake Sway Control, Corner Stability Control, a tire pressure monitoring system, height-adjustable front seatbelts with pre-tensioners, ISOFIX anchorages, rear parking sensors with a rearview camera, Auto Park Lock (only in the automatic), multiple voice alerts, and rear defogger with wiper.

Tata Altroz – Engine and Gearbox

Tata Altroz – Safety Equipment

The standard Altroz petrol comes powered by a 1.2-liter three-cylinder Revotron motor that manages to produce the same output as in the Punch, i.e., 84.8 horsepower and 113Nm of peak torque. The standard gearbox on the Altroz is a 5-speed manual, though a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic is made available with the 1.2-liter petrol engine. However, don’t think that a wet clutch DCT gearbox makes this a quick car – 0 to 100 kph takes an agonizing 17 seconds!

Tata Altroz – Safety Equipment

The other two powerplants of the Altroz include the 1.2-liter turbocharged three-banger with 108hp and 140Nm on offer, and the other a 1.5-liter turbo-diesel that makes around 89hp and 200Nm of peak twisting force. The Altroz diesel can do 0 to 100 kph in 12.3 seconds, with the sportier Altroz iTurbo achieving the same feat in around the 12-second mark. As far as fuel economy is concerned, the Altroz petrol is rated at 18.53 kpl, Altroz diesel at 23.03 kpl, and Altroz iTurbo at 18.13 kpl.

AutoBreeds’s Choice

In our opinion, the XT variant with the diesel engine will be a good overall bet. However, budget permitting, the Altroz iTurbo in the XZ trim will be great for those who want a decent-to-drive petrol version of this hatchback.

6. Maruti Suzuki Baleno

Maruti Suzuki Baleno

The Baleno has been one of the most-liked nameplates in India. With the latest avatar, Maruti Suzuki has primed the Baleno to be one of the best and most well-rounded packages that money can buy in the segment. When you consider the new-generation model, the revisions made all around have brought in perceivable changes that should be in the car’s favor.

While some new cars come with way too many options, Maruti Suzuki has restricted its list to just seven. As for its colors, the new Baleno is available in shades such as Nexa Blue, Opulent Red, Splendid Silver, Grandeur Grey, Luxe Beige, and Arctic White.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno – Exterior

Maruti Suzuki Baleno – Exterior

The new Baleno comes with a host of changes on the outside, beginning with the all-new and intricately-designed “NEXWave” front grille and a revamped headlamp cluster. The bumpers have been tweaked a little as well, while the 16-inch alloy wheels are new, and the LED taillights feature a thoroughly-revised design. Maruti Suzuki may not have altered the whole design of the Baleno, but the incremental changes made make it seem that much more appealing.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno – Exterior

There are enough shiny materials on the outside, which includes a chrome strip on the front grille, more on the door handles & around the windows, and a thick one running between the rear lights. Finally, there’s a sporty roof spoiler at the back and smooth-flowing lines all around. On a side note, whilst many will love the front design, the rather awkward-looking rear lights may contrive differing opinions.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno – Cabin and Practicality

Maruti Suzuki Baleno – Cabin and Practicality

The cabin of the new Maruti Suzuki Baleno surely looks more mature and slightly more modern than its predecessor. Showcasing its newness are tidy touches such as an interior theme that utilizes a blend of colors like blue, black, beige, and silver. The blue shade can be found on the dashboard, center aisle, doors & seats, whilst the silver trim can be seen on the dashboard, door handles, and steering wheel.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno – Cabin and Practicality

Adding some practicality to this cabin are items like rear AC vents, twin rear USB charging sockets, split-folding rear seats, tilt-adjustable multi-function steering wheel, and a front armrest with storage. The seats up front are quite good and comfy, even capable of accommodating larger frames. While there aren’t many unique features in the central MID or gauge cluster, there is a small quirk to be seen. When you have any of the doors open, the MID displays a Swift instead of a Baleno, and the ‘door open’ symbol is again shown a mere inches away, within the speedometer.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno – Cabin and Practicality

The flat-bottom leather-wrapped steering wheel feels good to hold, and it even has a shiny chrome ring in the center. The cabin of the Baleno is spacious enough for five (not-too-tall) people, though the raised middle seat isn’t what one would call luxurious. Build quality is decent, but it doesn’t come across as segment-leading in any particular way. The boot of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno has a capacity of 318 liters, making it fairly decent.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno – Features

  • Projector LED headlights
  • LED foglights
  • Auto-folding wing mirrors
  • Telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Cruise control
  • Automatic climate control
  • Arkamys surround-sound system
  • 9-inch touchscreen with SmartPlay Pro+ & Voice Assistant
  • Suzuki Connect with Alexa, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and smartwatch support

Maruti Suzuki Baleno SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment

Being a new car, one expects to find useful features. On that front, the new Maruti Suzuki Baleno does not disappoint at all. Unfortunately, its features list is mostly limited to incremental upgrades over the old car.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno – Safety Equipment

Maruti Suzuki Baleno – Safety Equipment

Built on the Suzuki-Tect architecture, the new Baleno is claimed to be even safer than before. Among its raft of safety equipment, the Baleno offers a 360-degree camera, reverse parking sensors, ESP with Hill Hold Assist, ABS with EBD & Brake Assist, ISOFIX child-seat anchors, head-up display, auto-dimming IRVM, and up to 6 airbags.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno – Engine and Gearbox

Maruti Suzuki Baleno – Engine and Gearbox

The new Maruti Suzuki Baleno has the same Dual Jet K-Series engine that powers the new-generation Swift. Here too, the 1.2-liter four-cylinder unit comes up with 88.5hp and 113Nm of torque. It can be mated to either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT, while the engine is fitted with an Idle Start Stop (ISS) system for better mileage.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno – Engine and Gearbox

Speaking of which, the Baleno manual has a claimed fuel efficiency of 22.35 kpl, with the Baleno AMT coming in at 22.94 kpl. In its manual avatar, the Baleno can go from 0 to 100 kph in 12.5 seconds and has a top speed of just under 180 kph. While it may not be as chuckable in the bends or nippy as the Swift, the Baleno feels sprightly enough under most urban conditions. It is unfortunate that the earlier CVT gearbox has been replaced by an AMT, which is neither as advanced nor as good to drive.

AutoBreeds’s Choice

For most people, the most value-for-money option within the Baleno family will likely be the Zeta variant. While it lacks some of the fancier features offered by the Alpha variant, the Baleno Zeta gets plenty of standard kit and also costs nearly one lakh rupees less.

7. Hyundai i20

Hyundai i20

The i20 has always been one of the most popular cars for small families and singles, alike. While the hatchback did good numbers for the Korean automaker in India, it is the latest model that has really become a blockbuster. The new Hyundai i20 comes with bucketloads of equipment while also offering buyers a wide variety of powertrain options. No wonder it is so well-liked by so many.

As you can tell, Hyundai took a page from Tata when it comes to naming its cars’ variants. Not too bad for customers, though. Its exterior color options include Metallic Copper, Fiery Red, Polar White, Typhoon Silver, Titan Grey, Starry Night, Polar White with Black Roof, and Fiery Red with Black Roof.

Hyundai i20 – Exterior

Hyundai i20 – Exterior

The new Hyundai i20 is longer and wider than the model it replaces, something that is quite noticeable. It also gets flashier styling cues, which is the result of Hyundai’s “sensuous sportiness” design language. The large and wide grille at the front is flanked by sleek projector headlights, the latter scoring neat LED eyebrows. The bonnet features subtle muscular creases while the chiseled bumper looks very sporty.

Hyundai i20 – Exterior

From the side, the new i20’s stance looks properly sporty and dynamic. The play of various character lines and creases go hand-in-hand with the rising beltline, 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, slightly exaggerated rear haunches, a swooping windowline, and ‘flyback’ rear quarter glass. The rear of the new i20 gets a spoiler with side-fin extensions, a long chrome strip stretching from one taillight to the other, sharply-styled tail lamps with Z-shaped LED running lights and a sculpted bumper that gets a faux rear diffuser.

Hyundai i20 – Cabin and Practicality

Hyundai i20 – Cabin and Practicality

The other big difference between this car and its precursor can be seen once you step inside. Here, you will be greeted with an entirely different and fresh design that feels both sporty and modern. You can have it in an all-black or a more upmarket dual-tone interior theme. Unfortunately, the quality of much of the trim in here feels tacky and is mostly all hard plastic. That said, the leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear lever, plus the front-center and door armrests have squidgy materials on them.

Hyundai i20 – Cabin and Practicality

The steering wheel’s design looks quirky, while the fully-digital instrument cluster and driver-oriented center console and touchscreen give this interior a sporty vibe. The seats provide good support on most drives, whilst their comfort factor (especially in the back) is great if you are on the smaller side. However, headroom at the back isn’t the best, and the digital rev counter is a bit counter-intuitive. Thankfully, the infotainment screen is large, easy to use, and of high-definition.

Hyundai i20 – Features

  • Puddle lamps with welcome function
  • Cornering lamps
  • Electrically adjustable & auto-folding door mirrors
  • Electric sunroof
  • Telescoping multifunction steering wheel
  • Cooled glovebox
  • Ambient LED lighting
  • Cooled wireless charging pad
  • Hyundai Bluelink app with smartwatch support
  • Cruise control
  • 7-speaker Bose sound system
  • Air purifier with AQI indicator
  • Automatic climate control with rear AC vents
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Hyundai i20 – Features

As expected, Hyundai has packed the new i20 to the gills with cool and fancy features. Of course, many of these are only available on the expensive high-end variants.

Hyundai i20 – Safety Equipment

Hyundai i20 – Safety Equipment

While it may not lead its class when it comes to top marks at the Global NCAP, the new Hyundai i20 does come with tons of safety equipment. Some of the main ones are 6 airbags, ESC, Hill Assist Control, rear parking sensors with a rearview camera, tire pressure monitor, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX anchors, emergency SOS function, and a rear defogger with timer.

Hyundai i20 – Engine and Gearbox

Hyundai i20 – Engine and Gearbox

The new Hyundai i20 gets three powerplant options along with five different transmission choices. Covering the petrol department is the 1.2-liter Kappa engine that develops nearly 82 horsepower and 115Nm of torque, followed by the 1.0-liter Turbo GDI that comes through with 118 horsepower and 172Nm of peak torque. The diesel portion is conquered by the 1.5-liter U2 unit producing almost 99 horsepower and 240Nm of maximum torque. Do note that the standard Kappa motor, when mated to the IVT gearbox, makes 87 horsepower. For reference, its 82hp figure is for the version with the 5-speed manual.

Hyundai i20 – Engine and Gearbox

When it comes to the i20 Turbo, it can be had with either a 7-speed DCT or Hyundai’s iMT. The oil burner in the Hyundai i20 gets a 6-speed manual transmission, only. The slowest i20 here is understandably the 1.2 Kappa, managing a top speed of 160 kph. The i20 Turbo, meanwhile, could do a top whack of approximately 180 kph and hit 100 kph in a claimed 9.9 seconds. As for the i20 diesel, it can hit 100 kph in 11.2 seconds. As for mileage, the i20 petrol manual claims 20.3 kpl, the i20 petrol IVT 19.6 kpl, i20 Turbo iMT & DCT 20.2 kpl, and i20 diesel claims 25.2 kpl.

AutoBreeds’s Choice

The Sportz trim with the turbo-petrol engine and DCT gearbox is a great pick if you love driving hard. On the other hand, the i20 diesel will be a good fit for those who do a lot of miles but still don’t want to sacrifice their car’s overall zest.

8. Maruti Suzuki Brezza

Maruti Suzuki Brezza

Just recently, Maruti Suzuki launched the all-new Brezza. Yes, it is now called only “Brezza”, and not Vitara Brezza. However, with the alteration in the name, the new model has retained its well-liked boxy silhouette whilst bringing newer styling elements to the table. The erstwhile Vitara Brezza has always been a top-selling model for India’s largest automaker, and as things are, that trend will likely continue into the future.

Thankfully, Maruti Suzuki has kept things simple when it comes to the new Brezza’s variants. As for the exterior color choices, the new Maruti Suzuki Brezza is available in shades like Pearl Arctic White, Splendid Silver, Magma Grey, Exuberant Blue, Brave Khakhi, Sizzling Red, Sizzling Red with Midnight Black Roof, Brave Khakhi with Arctic White Roof, and Splendid Silver with Midnight Black Roof.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza – Exterior

Maruti Suzuki Brezza – Exterior

In keeping with its predecessor, the exterior of this Brezza sticks to the “Don’t fix what isn’t broke” rule. The upright posture of this SUV is still there to be seen, and so are its flat front and rear fascias. These were some of the main attributes that buyers loved when it came to the old car, so Maruti Suzuki has kept the theme here too.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza – Exterior

As for the fresh additions, the Brezza features a totally new main grille with some chrome garnish, new dual-barrel projector headlights with LED DRLs, new front & rear bumpers, sleeker and sharper-looking tail lamps, and a more contoured tailgate that now proudly showcases the Suzuki logo and a prominent ‘Brezza’ branding in chrome. There’s a lot of black body cladding to be found, with both the bumpers receiving silver skid-plate-like embellishments as well. The Brezza also gets new & bolder-looking 16-inch alloy wheels, a sloping roof with functional rails, a sharkfin antenna, and a sporty spoiler.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza – Exterior

Maruti Suzuki has enlarged the rear haunches of the new Brezza to give it a more muscular feel, whilst the squared wheel arches and high ground clearance gives it that beloved SUV stance. In many ways, while the new model is undeniably still holding on to its previous gen’s overall design theme, the changes that have been undertaken are still substantial enough to set the two cars apart.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza – Cabin and Practicality

Maruti Suzuki Brezza – Cabin and Practicality

Step inside the new Brezza, and this is where it will instantly distinguish itself from the Vitara Brezza. Not only does the new car get a smarter dual-tone interior layout and ambient LED lighting, but the design itself is different enough for buyers to easily tell apart. The newly-introduced black & brown color scheme adds an upscale effect, while the use of different textures and trim keep things from feeling monotonous.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza – Cabin and Practicality

There are also plenty of buttons everywhere, a new Baleno-sourced flat-bottom steering wheel, and a tablet-like infotainment head unit on top of the dashboard. Compared to the old car, the new car is wider and that opens up even more space on the inside, especially for those seated at the back. To keep these occupants happy, Maruti Suzuki has included rear AC vents and dual USB fast-charging sockets. Seating three on the rear bench of the new Brezza won’t be an uncomfortable undertaking, and headroom is more than adequate.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza – Cabin and Practicality

While there are plenty of hard plastic bits in this cabin, at least those in the driver’s line of sight look decent. The front seats are the place to be as they are easily the most comfortable, but even the rear ones are quite alright. In terms of practicality, the Brezza offers bottle holders in all the door bins, a front armrest with a storage cubby, a rear armrest, and a cargo space measuring 328 liters.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza – Features

  • Electric sunroof
  • Smarty key with push-button ignition
  • Automatic headlamps
  • LED fog lamps
  • Multifunction steering wheel with telescopic adjustment
  • Automatic climate control
  • Surround Sense audio system by Arkamys
  • Wireless phone charger
  • 9-inch touchscreen with Next-Gen Suzuki Connect & OTA updates
  • SmartPlay Pro+ with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay

Maruti Suzuki Brezza – Features

Along with the recent update, the new Maruti Suzuki Brezza has seen a few extra goodies being added to its equipment list. This will undoubtedly make this model more popular than the old Vitara Brezza.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza – Safety Equipment

Maruti Suzuki Brezza – Safety Equipment

While the new Brezza hasn’t been crash-tested yet, Maruti Suzuki is certain that its new urban SUV will score well. The additional equipment to be found on the safety front in the new Brezza comes in the form of a head-up display, a 360-degree camera, and 6 airbags. Meanwhile, vital vigilant nannies such as ESP and Hill Hold Assist are now standard affairs on the Brezza. Rounding up the other features are ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, rear parking sensors, auto-dimming IRVM, ISOFIX anchorages, rear window with electric defogger and wipe & wash function, and impact-sensing door unlock.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza – Engine and Gearbox

Maruti Suzuki Brezza – Engine and Gearbox

Unlike the old car, the new Brezza is no longer sold with the much-loved DDiS diesel engine. It now only comes with the K15C Dual Jet Dual VVT petrol engine that also features ‘Progressive Smart Hybrid Technology’. For improved mileage, Maruti has tacked on other fuel-saving technologies like Idle Start Stop and Brake Energy Regeneration.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza – Engine and Gearbox

The end result of all this is a rated fuel economy of between 19.89 kpl and 20.15 kpl for the Brezza manual and 19.80 kpl for the Brezza automatic. The 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine in the new Brezza is capable of producing over 101 horsepower and 136.8Nm of maximum torque. Meanwhile, transmission chores are taken care of by a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. Pushed hard, the Brezza can go over 170 kph, with the run from 0 to 100 kph lasting between 12.5 to 13.4 seconds.

AutoBreeds’s Choice

According to us, the best variant of the new Maruti Suzuki Brezza is the VXI manual. It gets almost everything you will need and use, without being as overpriced as the top-end versions. However, if the majority of your drive is going to be within the city, then the VXI automatic will be worth the extra money.

9. Toyota Urban Cruiser

Toyota Urban Cruiser

The outgoing iteration of the Toyota Urban Cruiser is based on the previous-generation Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. Keep the Toyota next to the new Brezza, and the difference is considerable. Having said that, the fact that the Urban Cruiser wears the more premium Toyota badge, its appeal among buyers in the segment remains strong to this day. Obviously, when compared to its all-new Maruti counterpart, this SUV is more affordable.

Following in the Brezza’s footprint, the Urban Cruiser’s variant list has been kept simple. There are six monotone color options available, which include Suave Silver, Groovy Orange, Iconic Grey, Spunky Blue, Sunny White, and Rustic Brown. However, the Urban Cruiser is also offered in contrasting dual-tone shades like Rustic Brown with Sizzling Black Roof, Groovy Orange with Sunny White Roof, and Spunky Blue with Sizzling Black Roof.

Toyota Urban Cruiser – Exterior

Toyota Urban Cruiser – Exterior

The Urban Cruiser’s appearance might be a touch stoic, but its squared-off design and mostly flat angles do work in its favor. While it has been some time since it hit our market, people still love boxy-looking SUVs like the Toyota Urban Cruiser. The broad and bold-looking front end features a wedge-shaped twin-slatted grille with thick vertical bars on either side, dual-chamber LED projector headlamps, and dual-function LED DRLs.

Toyota Urban Cruiser – Exterior

The front also gets a sporty-looking bumper with an integrated faux skid plate. The rest of the car’s design takes into account the 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, squared wheel arches, a flat roof with roof-rail extensions and a floating rear design, a roof-mounted spoiler, split-LED rear lights, and chrome garnish on the tailgate. It may not be as modern in its appearance as the latest Brezza, but the Urban Cruiser’s simpler styling is non-offensive and will age well.

Toyota Urban Cruiser – Cabin Practicality

Toyota Urban Cruiser – Cabin Practicality

If you have sat inside the previous Vitara Brezza, then the interior of the Urban Cruiser will feel familiar. In fact, if it weren’t for the Toyota logo on the steering wheel and a slightly different Smart Playcast infotainment system, you would be hard-pressed to differentiate between the two cars. The cabin is spacious and there’s plenty of headroom, while legroom for those in the back is good too. The front seat squabs are well designed, and long road trips will not be a big bother.

Toyota Urban Cruiser – Cabin Practicality

Meanwhile, the big windows let in enough natural light into the cabin, making it feel quite airy. They also make the car easier to drive and maneuver when in city traffic or tight parking spots. There are several storage cubbies dotted across the cabin of the Urban Cruiser, while the boot space is 328 liters – identical to the Brezza. The interior does show its age now, but it is practical and can seat five people with relative ease.

Toyota Urban Cruiser – Features

  • Keyless entry with push-button start
  • Electrically operated & auto-folding door mirrors
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Automatic headlamps
  • Cruise control
  • Split-folding rear seats
  • Illuminated front footwell
  • Leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel
  • Automatic climate control
  • Touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto

Toyota Urban Cruiser – Features

As you can see, the now-aging Toyota Urban Cruiser lacks some of the more up-to-date tech that the Brezza gets, but its equipment is fairly good for the price.

Toyota Urban Cruiser – Safety Equipment

Toyota Urban Cruiser – Safety Equipment

If you remember, the previous Vitara Brezza scored a healthy 4-start GNCAP safety rating. Since the Toyota Urban Cruiser is almost identical to it, we can assume that it too has the same level of crash safety. The car comes with ABS with EBD, dual front airbags, Hill Hold Control, reversing parking sensors plus a rearview camera, ISOFIX child-seat anchor points, front seatbelts with pre-tensioners, rear defogger & wiper, and High Speed Warning Buzzer.

Toyota Urban Cruiser – Engine and Gearbox

Toyota Urban Cruiser – Engine and Gearbox

Under the bonnet of the Urban Cruiser is a 1462cc petrol engine that generates 103hp at 6,000 rpm and 138Nm of peak torque at 4,400 rpm. The Toyota Urban Cruiser is fitted with a 5-speed manual and an antiquated but effective 4-speed automatic gearbox. Unless you only want the convenience of not operating a clutch and like driving, the latter is best avoided. Coming to performance, the Urban Cruiser has a claimed top speed of around 170 kph.

Toyota Urban Cruiser – Engine and Gearbox

As for its acceleration, the Urban Cruiser will go from 0 to 100 kph in about 12 seconds. Of course, that’s the number for the manual version – the automatic is noticeably slower. The Urban Cruiser’s mileage figures are as follows: 17 kpl for the manual, and 18.76 kpl for the automatic. If you are wondering why the variant with the old 4-speed gearbox is more efficient, it is because it gets a small lithium-ion battery paired with an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG).

AutoBreeds’s Choice

If you really want to buy an Urban Cruiser right away, then your best bet will be to go with the mid-spec High variant. It gets enough standard kit and is priced at just under 10 lakhs.

10. Honda City (4th Gen)

Honda City (4th Gen)

While Honda has the latest avatar of the City already on sale in India, it still sells the previous 4th generation model. The 4th gen Honda City was launched for the first time back in late 2013, and it has been a great sales success. Even today, there are plenty of sedan car buyers who would love to get their hands on one of these. Of course, the fact that it is priced under 10 lakhs and still looks modern helps too.

With just two options to choose from, buyers of the 4th gen Honda City won’t be too confused. As for color choices, the sedan can be painted in one of five shades. Namely, Platinum White, Radiant Red Metallic, Modern Steel Metallic, Golden Brown Metallic, and Lunar Silver Metallic.

4th Gen Honda City – Exterior

4th Gen Honda City – Exterior

By now, we are all familiar with the exterior design and styling of the 4th gen Honda City. We can also agree on the fact that it is a pretty pleasing one, with not much wrong with it overall. The sculpted front fascia of the 4th gen City looks sporty yet sophisticated. It wears a thick chrome bar across the top of the honeycomb-mesh grille, while the dual-barrel headlights with its LED DRLs pair well with the sporty lower-bumper design. The front of this sedan looks really nice!

4th Gen Honda City – Exterior

Around the sides, the 4th gen City does look impeccably under-tired despite the suave-looking dual-tone 15-inch alloy wheels. There aren’t much in the way of unique design details here, but there are a couple of sharp lines that go from the front doors and end at the taillight. You will also notice the chrome door handles, a sharkfin antenna, and the sloped roof. The rear of the 4th gen City gets a boot-lip spoiler, a chrome strip, stylish tail lamps, and a sporty-looking bumper.

4th Gen Honda City – Cabin Practicality

4th Gen Honda City – Cabin Practicality

The interior of the 4th gen Honda City is a pretty comfortable place to be in. There is plenty of space, the seats are well-contoured, and the beige-black color palate is pleasing as well. Furthermore, the quality of fit & finish is plenty good, while there are soft-touch materials to match the City’s character. The amount of kneeroom in the back is sufficient, and the presence of dedicated vents will help cool down the rear cabin quicker during our summers.

4th Gen Honda City – Cabin Practicality

Honda is known for its smart packaging, so the City’s large 510-liter boot doesn’t come as a surprise. The same logic applies to the interior, where there are two charging ports and a center armrest with cupholders for rear occupants, and a front armrest with useful storage space. The driving position is fantastic, made easier to find with the help of a height-adjustable driver’s seat and tilt-adjustable steering wheel.

4th Gen Honda City – Cabin Practicality

In general, the 4th gen City’s cabin feels well-made and the greenhouse area is quite expansive. However, due to the low seating position and the high boot, rear visibility is not the best around. That said, the paddle shifters and the easy-to-read dials make driving the City in the city an enjoyable affair.

4th Gen Honda City – Features

  • LED DRLs

  • Automatic climate control with capacitive touch panel
  • Power-folding door mirrors

  • 7-inch touchscreen with built-in navigation, voice recognition, and smartphone connectivity
  • 8-speaker sound system
  • Diamond-cut 15-inch alloy wheels

4th Gen Honda City – Features

The 4th model might be showing its age on the inside, but it has enough modern features to keep it relevant for those who cannot afford the 5th gen Honda City.

4th Gen Honda City – Safety Equipment

4th Gen Honda City – Safety Equipment

The 4th gen Honda City might not be the latest of its kind, but its safety cart is not all empty. In fact, the sedan comes with ABS with EBD, dual front airbags, rear parking sensors with Honda’s Multi-View Rear Camera, ISOFIX rear-seat anchorages, a Day/Night IRVM, rear windshield defogger, High Speed Alert, automatic door locking & unlocking, and driver-side power window with Auto Reverse function.

4th Gen Honda City – Engine and Gearbox

The 4th gen City is powered by Honda’s lovely 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that’s also equipped with i-VTEC and SOHC. This free-revving motor not only sounds sweet but also pushes out 117hp at 6,600 rpm and 145Nm of torque at 4,600 rpm. It drives the front wheels via a smooth-shifting 5-speed manual gearbox which is a true joy to operate.

Weighing just over a ton, the City petrol is a true driver’s delight, no doubt about that. If you drive carefully, though, you could get 17.4 kpl. On the other hand, with a top speed just shy of 190 kph and a 0 to 100 kph time of about 10 seconds, the 4th gen Honda City is no slouch.

AutoBreeds’s Choice

Even though it costs nearly 40,000 rupees more, the top-spec V variant of the 4th gen City is the best pick. For that extra money, you get a touchscreen infotainment system, a better-sounding audio system, push-button start, the aforementioned Multi-View Camera, and power-folding door mirrors among a few other goodies.

Our Verdict

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, if your budget is within earshot of Rs. 10 lakhs, then these are some of the best cars in the market right now. In case you want something with a high-riding position and impeccable safety, then the Tata Punch is the car for you. But, if you want the former quality and good safety plus a larger vehicle, the likes of the Brezza or the Urban Cruiser will tick your boxes.

The 4th gen City is for those who like good performance and driving experience while also offering a large boot. While pricey, cars like the i20 and Baleno make for good hatchbacks and are not too small on the inside either. The Tiago and Altroz are the safest hatchbacks here, whereas the Swift is a great-looking and fun small car. As for the Wagon R, it is a safe and clean bet for those who want a practical yet affordable hatchback with great mileage as well.
