KTM RC 390

KTM RC 390 is our first choice of sports bike because of its price and performance ratio. No other bike even comes close to it by a fair margin all thanks to the powerful engine and competing price tag. The 2022 version of the RC 390 saw a significant price hike but with that came many improvements and features.

KTM RC390

The design is not subjective with wider front end and LED headlight with matrix design. Previous pointy design language was good to the eyes and it seemed more aerodynamic. It is available in three colours schemes – Orange, Factory Racing Blue and GP Edition.

KTM RC 390 is powered by the same 373.2cc engine which does the duty on the KTM Duke 390 and Dominar 400. This liquid-cooled, single cylinder engine pumps out massive 42.3 bhp at 9000 rpm and metal bending 37 Nm twisting force at 7000 rpm. These numbers from a rather small 370cc engine makes it a unique motorcycle. This engine is coupled to a 6-speed gearbox which is tuned for explosive performance. The RC 390 hits 100 kmph in about 5.5 seconds and goes all the way up to a top speed of more than 165 kmph. Speedo-indicated top speed is 175 kmph at which the rev limiter kicks in.

Speaking about the hardware, the bike gets USD forks up front and monoshock at the rear which is tuned to provide maximum stability and track like riding dynamics. The suspensions are on a stiffer side and will deliver harsh ride over bad roads. The tyres on the RC 390 are sourced from Metzeler and offer great grip but the speed rating has been decreased which is not welcome for track enthusiasts.

The bike offers a fully digital TFT instrument cluster that was only seen on the Duke 390 and offers all the details you’ll ever need. New KTM RC 390 is softer as it gets raised handlebars (that can be lowered by 14 mm for sportier ride), comfortable seats for both rider and the pillion.

In terms of features, the 2022 RC 390 comes with traction control, IMU based cornering ABS as well as optimised quick-shifter for seamless gear shifting. This iteration of the RC can be employed as sports tourer as it gets comfortable riding posture with raised handlebars.

There are many KTM RC 390 is the used bike market which you can consider if you are not fine with the price tag of the 2022 KTM RC 390.

This motor is good enough for 44.7 bhp of max power at 10,000 rpm and 37 Nm torque at 8000 rpm. A 6-speed gearbox is attached with the engine for handling the transmission of power to the rear wheel. Performance of the Ninja is top-notch and can hit a top speed of 190 kmph.

Kawasaki Ninja 400 is fitted with sophisticated digital-analogue instrument cluster which makes it look sporty and performance oriented machine.

The bike rides on 110 section front and 150 section rear tyres for superior road grip under all road conditions. A pair of USD forks handles front suspension requirements and a monoshock unit does the same job at the rear.

Yamaha R15 V4

It was Yamaha in 2008 when they amped up their game in Indian two-wheeler market by launching R15 and FZ. The R15 was a revolution back then as it was the first bike in India with a 150cc liquid cooled engine and performance of a 180cc bike. More than that, it was something more than just a regular city bike; it was an excellent tract machine with a small heart. The engine, gearbox and chassis were well sorted out that delivered strong track performance, even outgunning the Pulsar 220.

Yamaha R15 V4Yamaha R15 V4 comes in following colour options – Metallic Red, Dark Knight, Racing Blue, Metallic Grey, Anniversary Edition and MotoGP Edition.

Powering the R15 V4 is a liquid-cooled, single cylinder, 155cc, engine delivering a max power of 18.37 bhp at 10,000 rpm and a peak torque of 14.1 Nm at 8,500 rpm. The VVA tech engine is mated to a 6-speed transmission with the 6th cog being overdrive to extract as much top speed as possible. On the long highway runs, you can clock the speedometer up to 155 kmph.

The seat height is slightly raised to 810 mm but with low 142 kg kerb weight, the bike is suitable to most riders. However, a highly committed riding position with low slung clip-on handlebars will shoo away comfort seeking riders. Only the strongest of the riders to tame the beast can own one.

It is a fuel efficient sports bike due to its small engine. During these times of high petrol price, the requirement of a frugal sports bike is much higher and it clearly reflects in the sales number of the R15.

The instrument cluster of the R15 V4 is well sorted with an array on information available or the rider. Apart from speedometer, tachometer, odometer and trip meters, you get gear position indicator, real-time and average fuel efficiency, distance to empty as well as VVA activation display. VVA tech helps in improving the performance above 7000 rpm by altering the valve opening and closing time on the run. Also present is the Bluetooth connectivity which provides notifications from your smartphone.

If you are serious about track racing and precision cornering, then Yamaha R15 V4 is the bike of your choice. But remember, this bike is very uncomfortable for highway rides; however, many people have travelled thousands of kilometres on Yamaha R15.

Kawasaki Ninja 300R

In the years 2014, the Japanese motorcycle, manufacturer, Kawasaki, had launched its modern and updated Ninja 300 sports bike to replace the ageing Ninja 250R. Back, then the bike was welcomed with open hands but the problem was the price tag which was out of reach for many. After passing down the years, the Japanese bike maker manufactured the bike in India by accumulating local manufacturing vendors for the parts of the sports bike.

Kawasaki Ninja 300R

At present, the Ninja 300R is priced at Rs 3.4 lakh ex-showroom New Delhi which is still relevant for a sporty twin-cylinder sports bike. The sports bike is offered in Lime Green, Candy Lime Green and Ebony colours.

Speaking about the design, the sports bike from Kawasaki continues to employ same old twin-headlight design of the old generation bigger Ninjas. We had expected the company to bring on the table the latest and more aggressive design language of the ZX series of bikes. However, the design is still young and vibrant and gel well with the other sports bike in the market.

The Ninja 300 is Rs 58,000 more expensive than the TVS Apache RR310 and around Rs 40,000 over the RC 390. Both these bikes offer race-tuned components like Trellis frame, USD forks and radially mounted brake callipers for greater braking performance.

Powering the all-new BS6 Kawasaki Ninja 300 is a liquid-cooled, four-stroke, 296cc, parallel-twin, multi-port fuel injected, 8-valve DOHC engine. This mill gets dual throttle bodies for precision throttle control which is derived from the bigger Ninjas and helps in the production of 38.88 bhp at 11,000 rpm and 26.1 Nm torque at 10,000 rpm. If you have noticed, the torque is down by 0.9 Nm which will definitely affect the initial acceleration and roll-on acceleration of the bike in the real-world riding scenarios. The power is sent to the rear wheel via a slipper clutch and a 6-speed gearbox.

With added catalytic converter and certain components to make the engine meet BS6 emission norms, the new Ninja 300R tips the scale at 179 kg a generous increase of 5 kg from the previous BS4 version of the bike. We expect the new machine to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in around 6.5 second and manage to hit a top speed of 170 kmph. It is still made to perform and bring smile on the face of the riders.

Moving on to the fuel economy, the powerful and mean Ninja 300R can deliver a mileage in the range of 25 to 30 kmpl in mixed riding conditions. There is nothing wrong to expect 27 kmpl on the highways with greater cruising speed. With a large 17-litre fuel tank, the bike can be ridden to over 400 km in a single tankful. This prevents the rider from queueing up on the fuel stations more often.

Coming to the segment in which it rests, the new Ninja 300R is a sports tourer increased of a full-fledged track machine because of comfier riding posture. Yes, the handlebars are clip-on type but are raised to a fairly high level allowing the rider to lean forward but only up to a level where it is comfortable to hold for long time. The seat is also comfortable and offers more than sufficient space for both rider and the pillion.

The company has ensured that engine heat from the radiator does not fry the legs of the rider and the heat is vented to out away from the rider’s legs. This makes it a perfect city commuter as well. A tall visor at the front and full fairing around the bike deflects the high-speed wind-blast away from the rider’s head which improves the saddle time and the cruising speed. Speaking about the cruising speed, the bike has enough power to be ridden at 100 to 120 kmph all day long without tiring the rider.

For touring purpose, you can find some aftermarket saddlebags or panniers to increase the luggage carrying capacity of the bike allowing you to take essential things with you on long rides.

On the dashboard, you’ll find the same old analogue-digital instrument cluster that offers a large central tachometer and a small LCD screen for rest of the details like speed, odometer, trip meters and fuel gauge. On one side where the new manufacturers are offering TFT display with connectivity features, the Ninja’s old meter console doesn’t go well with the new generation of riders and the market they step in.

However, the popularity and the essence of the Ninja lineage of bikes continues to remain the same and the lovers of the Ninja 300 will get one no matter what the conditions and features are.

The Ninja 300 is built around rigid diamond type frame that offers great handling characteristics. It features telescopic forks at the front and a bottom link Uni-Trak monoshock suspension with gas reservoir and 5-step preload adjustment at the rear. This setup is tuned to provide a balanced ride and handling to the bike making it easy to take around the corners with solid stability on the highway rides as well as ability to absorb undulations on the broken patches of roads.

The hardware which is present on the Ninja 300 to bring it back from menacing speeds are 290 mm front disc gripped by a two-piston calliper at the front and a 220 mm disc brake unit with single piston calliper at the rear. Rider safety is offered by a dual-channel ABS which manages to keep tyres from skidding on the loose gravel or wet surface.

But since, Honda has discontinued the BS4 Honda CBR 250R in the Indian market, all you have is just one choice if you are looking for a sports bike with 250cc engine.

Powering the Gixxer SF 250 is a single cylinder, 249cc engine with a 4-valve head. The engine pumps out a max power of 26.1 bhp at 9300 rpm and a twisting force of 22.2 Nm at 7300 rpm. These numbers are enough to suggest a strong performance of the Gixxer SF 250.

While hauling a rider and 161 kg bike along with it, the engine is capable of catapulting the bike from 0 to 100 kmph in under 9 seconds. Bajaj Pulsar RS200

Didn’t like the Pulsar NS 200 because its naked? Want something sportier? Then, you are at the right place. Bajaj has another bike up their sleeves which goes by the name RS200. As everyone knows, RS200 is based on the Pulsar NS200 with additional fairing and aesthetic changes. There are a couple of features that you get as a bonus when you get a Pulsar RS200 over NS 200. It is priced at Rs 1,71,021 ex-showroom New Delhi.

Bajaj Pulsar RS200

Speaking about the colours, the RS 200 gets three options – Burnt Red, Metallic Pearl White and Pewter Grey.

At the heart of RS 200, you’ll find the same engine that we already talked about in the Pulsar NS 200. With the BS6 upgrade, there is no difference left among the two engines. The main reason behind this is the addition of Fuel injection system in the NS 200’s engine bringing it up to the level of RS 200 is terms of power and efficiency.

The liquid-cooled, single cylinder, 199.5cc engine with 3 spark plugs and 4-valves is designed to pump out a maximum power of 24.13 bhp at 9750 rpm and a peak torque of 18.5 Nm which arrives at 8000 rpm. This powerplant is paired to a 6-speed transmission that is seen on the Pulsar NS 200 as well. The performance difference isn’t much between the two bikes with Pulsar NS 200 a bit faster to 100 kmph from standstill and RS200 has higher top speed due to the presence of air cutting fairing.

Feature-wise, you get dual projector headlamps with strong 65-Watt halogen bulbs, clip-on handlebars, a striking LED taillight as well as dual-channel ABS system for enhanced rider safety. Apart from these add-ons, the whole bike is similar to that of NS200 in terms of hardware and equipment.

The addition of fairing, dual-channel ABS and twin projector headlights shot the weight of the bike upward by 10 kg and the RS200 tips the scale at 166 kg which is on the heavier side by all means. To keep things in a perspective, the Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 weighs in at 161 kg, a whole 4 kilos less than the Pulsar while pumping more power and torque.

Bajaj Pulsar RS200 will prove to be a perfect sports bike for riding around the corners as well as on frequent highway tours. It gets a perimeter frame for high rigidity and spot-on riding dynamics and comfortable riding position. Further, the RS200 is an old bike and there is a high chance of finding an old RS200 in used bike market at a much lower price.

TVS Apache RTR 200 4V

Moving on to another sports bike on this list of best sports bike in India, the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V. Unlike Bajaj, TVS works on its bikes with track racing experience that the company has acquired over a couple of decades. That particular experience is seen on the Apache 200 4V as it gets synchro-stiff chassis which is based on a double cradle frame. The bike is so much fun around the corner and inspires confidence to the riders.

TVS Apache RTR 200 4V

We understand that this is the only bike on this list which is naked. But our reason to include this machine on this list is that Apache RTR 200 4V is a great track machine if you want to go with a motorcycle which do not have a fairing. TVS Apache 200 4V is the best choice for racing enthusiasts and who loves to ride bikes around the corners on a budget. It gets three colour schemes to choose from – Gloss Black, Pearl White and Matte Blue.

At the heart of the Apache 200 4V is a single cylinder, 197.75 cc oil-cooled unit with a 4-valve head. This powerplant is capable of churning out a maximum power of 20.21 bhp at 8500 rpm and peak twisting force of 16.8 Nm at 7500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed gearbox which is tuned for track racing and city riding. However, Apache 200 4V also makes for an excellent tourer as it gets one of the best suspensions set up tuned for the Indian riding conditions.

The BS6 upgrade brought a major downside to the bike with the reduction of torque by a large margin. The BS4 version of Apache 200 4V extracted 18.1 Nm torque which was a tad lower than the Pulsar NS 200’s 18.5 Nm figure. Addition of a catalytic converter and retuning has reduced the engine torque by 1.3 Nm which will definitely affect the performance of the bike. However, the company claims that the top speed of Apache 200 4V hasn’t changed which is 127 kmph.

Apache 200 4V is also one of the most feature loaded bikes in under 2 lakh range. There is a fully digital instrument cluster with minor changes done in the layout to accommodate connected features at the middle-bottom of the screen. You’ll get notifications such as missed calls, messages turn by turn navigation etc, right on the LCD display once you connect the bike with your smartphone via Bluetooth. You can get ride logs and data related to your motorcycle on your smartphone through an app developed by TVS Motor Company.

There is a telescopic fork at the front and a monoshock at the rear sporty ride and handling. Speaking about the ride quality, the Apache 200 4V is among the best riding motorcycle in this segment with excellent suspension set up that takes on bumps with utmost ease. Also, with an aggressive yet upright siting position, you can ride whole day long on the highways and corner around corners like a pro.

The bike is available in 2 variants, one with dual channel ABS and another one is single channel ABS. Price of the bike starts from Rs 1,39,690 ex-showroom. This makes it one of the affordable 200 cc motorcycles in the country.

Yamaha R15 S

Yamaha R15 S is a simpler version of the acclaimed R15 V3 with a single-piece seat for pillion comfort and regular telescopic forks upfront.  Apart from it, most of the bike is identical to the regular race machine. Only two colours are available on this R15 – Racing Blue and Matte Black.

Yamaha R15 S

Powering the R15 S is a liquid-cooled, single cylinder, 155cc, engine delivering a max power of 18.1 bhp at 10,000 rpm and a peak torque of 14.1 Nm at 8,500 rpm. The VVA tech engine is mated to a 6-speed transmission with the 6th cog being overdrive to extract as much top speed as possible. On the long highway runs, you can clock up to 136 kmph top speed.

The seat height is slightly raised to 810 mm but with low 142 kg kerb weight, the bike is suitable to most riders. However, a highly committed riding position with low slung clip-on handlebars will shoo away comfort seeking riders. Only the strongest of the riders to tame the beast can own one.

The instrument cluster of the R15 S is a fully digital instrument cluster with full range of information available or the rider. Apart from speedometer, tachometer, odometer and trip meters, you get gear position indicator, real-time and average fuel efficiency, and distance to empty as well as VVA activation display. VVA tech helps in improving the performance above 7000 rpm by altering the valve opening and closing time on the run.

KTM RC 125

We cannot keep away from putting in a KTM bike when we talk about sports bike. Its KTM’s forte of making world-class fun machines on two wheels. KTM RC 125 is the first entry into this list for its high price is the concluding factor. At Rs 1.6 lakh ex-showroom, the 125cc sports bike feel overwhelmingly overpriced. But when it comes to performance, KTM always proves its point, so does the RC 125.

KTM RC 125

The RC 125 is powered by a miniature class liquid-cooled, 124.71 cc single cylinder engine with a 4-velve head. This mill generates 14.3 bhp at 9250 rpm and a peak torque of 12 Nm at 8000 rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox helping the bike to achieve a top speed of 115 kmph on a long straight road with a light rider. The best part, it gives a fuel economy of more than 40 km per litre. This is the main reason why people are mad over 125cc bikes from KTM, they got the character of KTM and fuel economy as well.

What makes RC series of bikes a speciality in sports bike department is their hardware that makes them capable to carving out near perfect corners inspiring confidence in the riders and holding their line during the turn. The suspension setup is highly stiff and can be a nightmare over the bad roads as each and every shock will tickle your spine. Hard suspension is to keep the bike stable at high speeds and stay in their line of attack during a corner.

You sit on a high 828 mm seat holding on to a pair of low-slung clip-on handlebars. This riding positing is good for short ride stints and not for long highway hauls. The rider triangle is optimised for control and not for comfort. If you are a bulky person, then chances are high that you might complain for wrist and shoulder pain.

There are two paint schemes that you can choose form – Ceramic White and Dark Galvano.

Suzuki Gixxer SF

At last spot on the list of the best sports bikes in India you’ll see Suzuki’s Gixxer SF sports bike. A bike which is in second generation after coming to India along with the first Gixxer 150 in 2014. The previous generation SF was bit of proportionate at the design level. It always felt as an afterthought and came with the tubed handlebars. The new generation of the Gixxer SF is equipped with sporty clip-on handlebars without compromising on the comfortable sitting position for long rides.

Suzuki Gixxer SF

This time around, the SF get striking looks with full LED headlight setup. The design is similar to its elder sibling, the SF 250 and ticks all the right boxes. The Gixxer SF is powered by an air-cooled, 155cc, single cylinder engine with 2-valve head. This powerplant is good for generating 13.4 bhp and 13.8 Nm torque at 8000 rpm and 6000 rpm respectively. The engine is coupled to a 5-speed gearbox which is tuned for city riding.

The performance of the bike is reasonable off the mark and feels spirited up to 80 kmph after which bike struggles a bit due to low power output. However, Gixxer SF takes around 16 seconds to touch 100 kmph and goes to a top speed of 120 kmph which is good for a bike with these power figures. The windblast is contained due to the fairing but above 100 kmph mark, presence of a small visor makes it hard to keep up with the wind blast.

Suzuki made sure the Gixxer SF is able to lure customers with fully-digital instrument cluster providing all the important details to the rider. There is a gear position indicator as well, making your rides easier in the city traffic conditions. We expected a little more than that something like real-time and average fuel economy, distance to empty etc.

Choose Suzuki Gixxer SF if you are more towards styling and city performance with excellent fuel economy of about 45 kmpl. You can take the Gixxer to occasional highways rides with your friends and you won’t regret the part. One can choose from Glass Sparkle Black, Metallic Triton Blue and Pearl Mira Red colour options according to their taste.
