Based in Pune Maharashtra, Bajaj Auto is India’s one of the oldest two-wheeler manufacturer which sold Vespa scooters in its early days. After parting with Vespa, Bajaj made their own line-up of family scooters and one of them became highly popular, the Chetak.

Towards the end of twentieth century, Bajaj partnered with Japan’s Kawasaki and sold bikes with their expertise. Then came the era of Pulsar motorcycles, there was this time when people preferred fuel efficient bikes, Bajaj offered powerful machines for affordable price tag. This changed the whole scenarios of performance motorcycles in India and now in 2023, performance bikes are an easy sight on the Indian roads.

Bajaj later joined forces with KTM and launched affordable yet powerful KTM bikes in India and found great success. The company now sells bike with various partnerships like KTM, Husqvarna, Triumph and Kawasaki in manufacturing facility.

The company offer fuel efficient bikes in the commuter segment including 100cc, 110cc and 125cc bikes. Even the bikes in 150cc category offer good mileage for everyday use. Due to high petrol price, fuel efficiency is an important parameter to consider before you buy bike. Prices in this list are ex-showroom price excluding RTO tax and bike insurance as it differs from state to state.

Bajaj Dominar 400

The first bike on this list is the Bajaj Dominar 400. It is a hyper touring machine from the house of Bajaj. It is the only bike in Bajaj’s product portfolio to cost over Rs 2 lakh. Dominar is a brand that goes with the word touring as it is made for one specific purpose and that is hyper touring.

More than that, Dominar was be used in the city as well but its 185 kg kerb weight might create some hindrance in the easy manoeuvring in the traffic laden streets of the cities. However, such kind of weight helps Dominar in attaining a stable ride. If one rides over 120 kmph on the highways, the Dominar 400 keeps super composed and does not scare the rider away to reduce the speed.

Bajaj Dominar 400

Dominar 400 is the flagship motorcycle from the house of Bajaj so much so that the company increased its price by nearly 30,000 in a matter of just two years. This move was played to create space for the positioning of the Dominar 250 below it.

The 2019 update of the Dominar 400 blessed the machine with extra power, USD front suspension, over all tuned-up suspension for better ride and handling, a DOHC head, larger radiator and added information on the instrument cluster. All these features increased the drool rating on the bike and try to provide maximum benefits of its premium positioning.  Only two colours are available on the Dominar 400 – Green and Black.

Coming to the features departments, the Dominar 400 comes with spectacular 8 section full LED headlight cluster with DRLs. This is the most sophisticated looking part of the bike and makes it stand apart from the crowd. The taillight and the turn indicators are also LED units.

It comes with a comfortable riding posture with perfectly placed handler and well-padded seat. There is more than sufficient room for the pillion to stick along for a long ride. However, due to the lack of front wind visor, the windblast will be annoying and intolerable on long hauls. For that, you would like to install an aftermarket windshield visor and some other fairings to reduce windblast.

Moving on to its powertrain, the Dominar 400 is powered by a single cylinder, liquid-cooled, 373.2cc, fuel injected engine breathing through a 4-valve DOHC head. This motor is derived from the KTM 390 Duke and RC bikes albeit in a lower state of tune. It pumps out 39.42 bhp of max power at 8800 rpm and 35 Nm torque at 6500 rpm. There is a 6-speed gearbox that sends power to the rear wheel.

With all this power available at the twist of a wrist, you can surge past 100 kmph in just 7.6 seconds and charge up to a top speed of over 160 kmph. On the highways though, you can easily cruise at 100-120 kmph with ease without straining the engine.

Again, due to all this power, the fuel economy of the bike is well below 30 kmpl in the mixed riding conditions. One can touch 30 kmpl on the highways though.

Bajaj Dominar 400

At the dashboard, there is a fully digital instrument cluster that offers everything from speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, average fuel economy and instantaneous fuel economy with distance to empty readout. There is another digital screen fitted on the top of fuel tank that displays info regarding the odometer and trip meter with gear position indicator.

The bike is held together by a pressed steel perimeter frame that is highly rigid for solid cornering prowess. Dominar 400 is suspended on a pair of USD forks at the front end and a monoshock at the rear. This setup is tuned to provide a stable and comfortable touring experience.

Coming to the braking department, here you will find a capable 320 mm rotor at the front with radially mounted twin-piston callipers. At the rear there is a single piston floating calliper gripping on a 230 mm disc. There is a dual channel ABS for safer braking performance under extreme conditions on the highways.

Bajaj Dominar 250

Up next, we have the Dominar 250; it is the younger sibling to the Dominar 400 and is made for taking on those long highway runs. The reason Bajaj chose to launch the smaller capacity Dominar to make Dominar brand available to wider audience.

The high price tag and low mileage of Dominar 400 made it impossible for some riders to divert their purchase to the classic cruisers of street naked bikes that are priced way down the ladder when compared to the Dominar 400.

Bajaj Dominar 250

In terms of design, the Dominar 250 is completely similar to that of its elder sibling but features some changes. These changes include thinner tyres, old instrument cluster and smaller disc brake unit. What remains same in the USD forks, the 8-section LED headlight cluster and the rest of the bike’s appearance.

Speaking about the powertrain, the engine on the smaller Dominar is based on the Duke’s 250’s single cylinder, liquid-cooled, 248.8cc, fuel injected motor with 4-valve head providing higher efficiency. This mill churns out impressive 26.63 bhp of power at 8500 rpm and 23.5 Nm torque at 6500 rpm. There is a 6-speed gearbox attached to the engine via a wet multi-plate clutch.

With a kerb weight of 180 kg, the 250cc version of the Dominar is able to return a modest mileage of about 30 kmpl in the city riding conditions. However, when you are out on the highways, you can expect over 35 kmpl at constant cruising speed. Its 13-litre fuel tank will be able to provide a riding range of over 400 km when on a long haul. This kind of range is more than sufficient for reducing number of visits to the fuel stations.

There is a fully digital instrument cluster that offers most of the information to the rider but misses on the trip computer and additional LCD screen on the fuel tank. You get 8-section LED headlight with DRLs as standard and even the tail light is LED unit. The bike is built around pressed steel perimeter frame that is rigid enough to deliver confidence-inspiring handling.

Bajaj Dominar 250

Coming to the suspension system, there is USD forks and monoshock unit at the front and the rear. This is tuned to offer a comfortable ride experience while travelling to places unknown.

To stop a bike of this weight and potential, one needs strong brakes on offer.  The Dominar 250 is equipped with 300 mm front rotor which is gripped by a twin-piston calliper and at the rear 230 mm rotor is present which is gripped by a single piston calliper. Further safety is offered by a dual-channel ABS and grippy tyres.

Compared to the Dominar 400’s 110 and 150 cross section tyres at the front and the rear respectively, the 250cc version comes with slightly thin tyres of 100 mm cross-section at the front and 130 mm cross-section at the rear. Both the 17-inch alloy wheels are wrapped with tubeless tyres.

It can hit 100 kmph from zero is about 11 seconds and goes to a top speed is around 140 kmph.

Bajaj Chetak Electric

Bajaj Chetak was the most popular scooter brand in India in the late twentieth century and at a time there was a waiting period of nearly 10 years on the Chetak scooter from Bajaj. After the discontinuation of 2-stroke engines and increasing popularity of gearless scooters, the Chetak brand lost its significance and thus Bajaj discontinued Chetak series of scooters in India.

Bajaj Chetak Electric

Chetak Electric is the first electric scooter from the brand that makes Pulsar like performance-oriented bikes. It was not a surprise when Bajaj called it a Chetak with electric powertrain in a bid to revive the forgotten brand.

Bajaj Chetak electric is made on a monocoque chassis which reminds us of the Vespa scooters. It is a premium scooter as seen from its premium touch-ups like soft touch switches, premium paint schemes, fully digital instrument console, LED headlight and taillight with progressive LED turn indicators and premium stitches on the seats. Urbane and Premium are two variants of Bajaj Chetak and they get different choice of colours – Citrus Rush, Cyber White, Brooklyn Black, Hazelnut, Indigo Metallic and Velluto Russo.

Powering the Chetak electric is an air-cooled BLDC motor mounted on the frame. It develops a max power of 4.08 kW and 16 Nm of torque. This motor is fed by a 3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack which is non removable and does not support fast charging. One can fully charge the battery in 5 hours of charging from home socket. If you are in a hurry, charge the Chetak for one hour to get 20 km of range.

There are three ride modes available on the Chetak – Eco, City and Sport. In the Eco mode and City mode, the top speeds are restricted and you can get a max range of 95 km from a single charge. However, in the Sport mode, the top speed is increased to 70 kmph and range comes down to about 70-72 km per charge. This is not bad at all if you ride 50 km per day within the city limits and can charge the scooter overnight.

Bajaj Chetak Electric

It gets a fully digital instrument cluster with all the important information on offer with Bluetooth connectivity feature. At both ends, you get 12-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels wrapped with tubeless tyres.

On the suspension front, there is leading link suspension at the front and spring-loaded shock absorber with hydraulic damper. The suspension is tuned to provide a plush ride quality and can absorb road undulations with ease. Stopping the Chetak is a front disc brake and drum brake at the rear with combined braking system.

Bajaj Pulsar N250/F250

The next bike on this list is the Pulsar N250. We wanted to keep this machine on the pole position but here are certain nicks which held our hands to place it on the second position behind the Duke 200. Bajaj Pulsar N250 is the result of years of waiting that Pulsar lovers were going since many years now. After whole 20 years, the brand Pulsar received an overhaul in terms of design, the engine, the powertrain, the aesthetics and the stance.

There is a semi-faired version of the N250 which is called F250 and caters to the riders looking for a sports tourer at affordable price point.

Bajaj Pulsar N250/F250

With the saddle height being at 790 mm, most riders will be able to ride the bike without any issue but some shorter riders might face problem. The front cowl is small and not a large bikini fairing as the older Pulsar.

It is priced at Rs 1.45 lakh ex-showroom New Delhi for the single-channel ABS and Rs 1.49 lakh for the dual-channel ABS version. Its price is on par with the Yamaha FZ25 which is also among the cheapest quarter-litre bike on sale in India. Colours on the Pulsar N250 are Techno Grey, Racing Red and Brooklyn Black.

The powertrain on the new Pulsar N250 is an all-new 249.07cc, air and oil-cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke, fuel-injected, 2-valve SOHC engine. This engine pushes out respectable 24.1 bhp of power at 8750 rpm and 21.5 Nm twisting force at 6500 rpm. All this power is handled by a 5-speed gearbox which has balance gear ratios offering good low-end pickup in the city limits and respectable highway performance. It is the first time that original Pulsar family gets assist and slipper clutch which is light to pull and also helps in aggressive downshifting.

The suspension system on the N250 is handled by telescopic forks at the front and a gas-charged monoshock unit on the rear swing-arm. This setup is tuned towards offering a balance of both good cushioning as well as greater high-speed stability. When compared to the Duke 200 which is on the first rank on this list, the ride and handling of the Pulsar N250 is different and not as composed and accurate as you would get on the Duke 200.

On the dashboard, there is a semi-digital instrumentation with analogue tachometer and LCD screen for rest of the readouts like speedometer, odometer, trip meters, fuel gauge, gear position indicator, average and instantaneous fuel consumption, distance to empty and digital clock.

Bajaj Pulsar N250/F250

Finally, we talk about the mileage; the new Pulsar N250 can deliver around 40 kmpl on the highways and 35 kmpl in the city riding conditions. The fuel tank volume is now reduced to 14 litres and even with this volume; anyone can extract a range of over 500 km in a single tankful. If you plan for a tour, the range is respectable.

It is the braking department where this bike lacks a lot. Despite having 300 mm front disc brake and 230 mm rear disc brake, the bike safety net is provided only by option of a single channel and dual-channel ABS.

If you are looking for bike with greater performance but at an affordable price point, then you should go for used bike from your nearest used bike dealer.

A 5-speed gearbox is attached to the engine via a multi-plate clutch.

Expect the bike to offer great city performance due to flat torque curve that provides good pick-up right from low rpm. In terms of mileage, its twin-spark engine can provide up to 50 kmpl mileage on the highways at steady speeds. It is possible to get over 45 kmpl mileage in real-world conditions. This kind of mileage is expected from a bike of this segment because fuel price are going upwards day by day. A 14-litre fuel tank can deliver a riding range of around 500 km in a single tankful.
